Frequently Asked Questions

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy approach that helps alleviate distress associated with maladaptive memories. Initially created as a treatment to alleviate distress from traumatic memories that had not successfully been processed, recent developments in research demonstrate it's effectiveness in the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression. It uses bi-lateral stimulation such as guided eye movements, or tapping, to help reprocess past unresolved memories or maladaptively stored information, which reduces the emotional impact experienced in the present moment.

How can EMDR help with OCD?

EMDR therapy can help individuals with OCD by targeting and reprocessing the maladaptively stored information associated to triggers, emotions, and body sensations. By reprocessing early experiences and belief formation it can support the nervous system to return to a neutral stance in response to intrusive thoughts, images, urges, and doubts.  The theory is that early overwhelming experiences created a defense mechanism that maintains current disturbance and distress associated to obsessions and compulsions. This approach aims to reduce the distress associated to intrusions, reduce the frequency of obsessions and compulsions, leading to better management of OCD symptoms.

Do you offer training for therapists?

Yes, we offer workshops and CPD training for EMDR therapists who are already trained in basic EMDR training. We will be focusing on advanced EMDR techniques and attachment-focused methodologies so a basic understanding of attachment theory is assumed, although a refresher on the attachment theory will be covered. We also offer both group and individual supervision sessions.

Testimonials

“Joyce was excellent, open-minded, kind and fun. I feel relaxed, kinder to myself, centred and have a new narrative that is really helpful. Joyce, thank you for letting me imagine again”

“I have seen a range of therapists over the years, but Joyce has been by far the best. She is warm, clever, and highly-intuitive and seems to have a sixth-sense in her understanding of my feelings. I have benefited so much from our work together. Thank you Joyce, therapy with you really has changed my life!“

"I can't say enough good things about Linda...EMDR therapy has been life-changing for me, especially in dealing with Pure O. From the start, I felt comfortable and understood, which made all the difference. Each session helped me feel more in control of my thoughts and less anxious. It’s amazing how much progress I’ve made thanks to Linda. If you're struggling with similar issues, I can highly recommend EMDR with Linda. I’m so grateful for the help and support she has given me!"

"I went to Bea having been diagnosed with OCD and was in a very low and desperate place. I was plagued by intrusive thoughts and unable to break the obsessive-compulsive cycle. To say that Bea helped me turn my life around is no exaggeration. From day one she was extremely open, kind and supportive, with absolutely no judgement. Something I also really valued, is that she always treated me like a normal, intelligent person. She always listened and took the time to understand my unique experience. 6 years down the line I'm pleased to say that I am still able to manage my OCD well and live a relatively OCD-free life. I still use the techniques I learnt with Bea on a regular basis. I can't recommend her enough."

"The main aim of my therapy was to help with my OCD, since therapy I have been managing so well and utilise all the skills I learnt. I am now at a place I didn't think I would ever be able to reach again. I believe this therapy has changed my life! I was in an extremely difficult place before mentally and couldn't understand a way that I would ever feel like my old self. The things I have learnt I will carry forever and will be forever thankful to Bea for how much she helped me and how much of a compassionate, non-judgemental and realistic approach was taken to everything".
